Ear Problems in Pets: What They Are and How to Spot Them

Nextmune

Ear problems are common in dogs and cats, especially during the spring and summer months. They can be quite uncomfortable for your pet, but the good news is that the signs are usually easy to spot — and with the right care, you can help your pet feel better quickly.

What Are Ear Problems?

Ear problems usually refer to inflammation or irritation inside the ear canal. This can be caused by bacteria, yeast, trapped moisture, allergies, or foreign objects like grass seeds. These issues can lead to pain, itching, and infection if not treated in time. In more serious cases, untreated ear problems can even affect your pet’s hearing or balance.

Why Are Ear Problems More Common in Spring and Summer?

During the warmer months, pets are more active outside. They may go swimming, roll around in the grass, or get bathed more often. These activities can lead to moisture, dirt, or small objects getting trapped in the ears. Allergies (to things like pollen or food) can also contribute to ear irritation.

Common causes of ear problems include:

  • Frequent swimming or bathing

  • Moisture buildup in the ears

  • Grass seeds or other foreign objects

  • Allergies to pollen, food, or dust mites

How to Recognize Ear Problems in Your Pet

Look out for these signs:

  • Frequent head shaking

  • Scratching or rubbing at the ears

  • A bad smell coming from the ears

  • Redness or discharge in or around the ears

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s best to contact your vet. The earlier you catch it, the easier it is to treat — and the less discomfort for your pet.

What Can You Do at Home?

  • Check your pet’s ears regularly, especially after outdoor play or swimming.

  • Dry the ears gently after baths or wet walks.

  • Avoid using cotton swabs or cleaning products unless advised by your vet.

Ear problems are common but manageable, especially if you know what to look out for. By staying alert — especially in spring and summer — you can help keep your pet’s ears clean, healthy, and pain-free!
